Hi! I'm John.
I've done a lot of good and almost lost my family in the process...
In 2006, I married my high school sweetheart. We were in college, and I was working a couple of different jobs to make sure we didn't take on student debt. Eighteen months later, our first daughter was born - things were pretty busy...
We took a dream job during my senior year of college at the church we grew up in, and I finished my degree online while trying to prove myself to those who took a chance to hire me so young. We had some amazing success early on, but I wasn't home much. And after several years of burning it at every end, I almost lost it all.
Fast-forward a couple of years. I took on a different role at a different church, now as the Lead Pastor. I got to set the culture, and I thought things would be different, but they weren't. My bad habits and misplaced priorities followed me. "I can't do this anymore..." were the candid words from my wife, Heidi, that changed everything.
I then began a relentless journey of learning from mentors who have led at the highest levels in their organizations and from studying various perspectives on healthy life rhythms. Since that point, although life hasn't slowed down much (I now have five daughters and still lead a growing church along with SMPL), we now live life intentionally, at work and at home. And I have had the privilege of coming alongside others to do the same.

and I'm here to help.
Since 2008, I’ve had the privilege of serving as a pastor, helping people discover and live out their purpose of glorifying God with clarity and intention. Along the way, I’ve helped lead a few organizations and two congregations through revitalization, gaining hands-on experience in leadership, organizational growth, and fostering a contagious culture.
All those years culminated in the development of SMPL, my productivity framework that helps business owners and teams create more meaning and margin for what matters most. I'm now sharing the same principles that have shaped my journey, so you can win at work and at home.
The Heart of SMPL
At the heart of why SMPL exists is the truth of Jeremiah 29:7: “Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you… for in its welfare you will find your welfare.”
The word translated as "welfare" is the Hebrew word shalom, which conveys a dual sense of peace and plenty. It describes life working the way God designed it to work, where both peace and plenty are experienced internally and externally, personally and communally.
SMPL is the small, practical response to seek peace and plenty for this generation.
We exist to help people, near and far, experience peace at home and plenty from the meaningful work they do. We want moms and dads to be better equipped to provide well for their families without sacrificing the peace their children need through their presence. In short, we help people win at work and home by creating meaning and margin for what matters most.
At the same time, we believe ultimate peace and lasting fulfillment are not found in systems, productivity, or success alone. True and complete shalom is only found through faith in Jesus Christ, who provides peace with God and plenty that extends beyond the here and now.
SMPL is not a replacement for that hope, but is a practical expression of it.
Our communities flourish when families experience peace and plenty. That’s why we aim to serve in ways that support full, holistic lives marked by purpose, presence, and steady progress toward what matters most.
